$w=-P\Delta V$
and
$w=-\int_{V_{1}}^{V_{2}}PdV=-nRTln\frac{V_{2}}{V_{1}}$

### Internal energy

Could someone clarify exactly what U, internal energy, is? Beyond the equation U=q+W, why is U significant?

### Re: Internal energy

U stands for all energy consisting in my closed system, and is the sum of all heat in or released by a system (H) and all work done or done by a system (w).

The total energy within the closed system is U which is internal energy.

Why can’t U be the internal energy of an open system?
