A system doing no work

Postby Sanjana Borle 2K » Tue Feb 11, 2020 9:49 pm

How do we know that a system is not doing work on the surroundings? Would the only case for this be that the system is not expanding?

The systems we deal with now only have work when they expand or get compressed.

In a closed system, energy cannot be transferred to the surroundings.

I might be wrong but I think work is only done when there is a volume change.

So far in the course, the only form of work we have learned is the system expanding and pushing against the surroundings.
