Reversible vs Irreversible

What do these titles determine about one's system, and in turn what equation do you use?

Reversible is when the reaction is at equilibrium where as irreversible is not, an example of this would be combustion. Equations that relate to this would be work in which reversible process would be:-nRTlnV2/V1 and irreversible: -Pex*DeltaV

If a system is reversible that means that any are equal to zero

In terms of entropy, when a system is reversible it means that the delta S total is = 0.

For reversible, delta S of the system is equal to -delta S of the surroundings.

For irreversible reactions, pressure is held constant as temperature changes, while reversible reactions show the change in both temperature and pressure. For irreversible reactions, work = - PdeltaV. For reversible, work = - nRTln (V2/V1), which represents an integral. In addition, entropyTotal = 0 in a reversible reaction, with entropySystem = - entropySurroundings. In an irreversible reaction, entropyTotal = entropySystem and entropySurroundings = 0.

Reversible: w=-nRT(ln(v2/v1))
Irreversible: w=-p(delta v)

Irreversible is when the system changes all at once and reversible is when the system changes a tiny bit at a time so the surroundings and the system are always equal to each other at every partial change.

Irreversible usually means there is a sudden change that happens very quickly, and the surroundings/ system entropies are not equal. Reversible means that there are a series of little partial changes during which the entropy change of the system is equal to the negative entropy change of the surroundings.

For a reversible equation, total entropy would be equal to zero. For something like combustion, that is irreversible, you would have a significant change in entropy

For a reversible equation Delta S is equal to -Delta S surr, which means that Delta S total is 0.
For irreversible Delta S is equal to Delta Stotal

Reversible means the system is in equilibrium with the surroundings. Whatever happens to the surroundings will therefore affect the system. When it is irreversible it is not in equilibrium.

Reversible is when a process can go either way and irreversible can only go one way. The entropy of the system of a reversible reaction is 0 and the the entropy of surroundings of a irreversible reaction is 0.

For a system to be considered reversible, delta S must equal 0.
