Calculating Moles

Postby Jacquelyn Challis 2B » Tue Mar 02, 2021 5:01 pm

An old sapling question that I never answered says: Automobile airbags contain solid sodium azide, NaN3, that reacts to produce nitrogen gas when heated, thus inflating the bag.
2NaN3(s)⟶2Na(s)+3N2(g)
Calculate the value of work for the system if 32.0 g NaN3 reacts completely at 1.00 atm and 22 ∘ C.
The hint says to calculate the moles of N2 produced using the stoichiometry in the balanced chemical reaction, and this is where I'm stuck. How do I find the moles of N2 produced?

You would calculate the moles of NaN3 that is used in the reaction (32g/molar mass of NaN3) and then multiply that number by (3 moles N2/2 moles of NaN3) to account for the stoichiometric coefficients.

You would first want to find the moles of NaN3 given the 32.0 g NaN3. From the moles of NaN3, you can use stoichiometry to find the moles of N2. # mol NaN3 * (3mol N2 / 2 mol NaN3) = mol N2 that you want.

First you would calculate the moles of NaN3 by dividing the mass given in the problem by the molar mass of NaN3. Then to calculate the number of moles of N2 produced you would look at the stoichiometric coefficients in the reaction. For every 2 mol of NaN3 3 mol of N2 are produced. You would multiply mole of NaN3 by 3/2. hope this helps!
