The concept of reagents
When it comes to the concept of reagents, are there any other situations in which they would engage in reactions other than being completely utilized as part of a chemical equation? Or do we always assume that they will play their part when put within the context of an equation.

Re: The concept of reagents
Reagents are typically assumed to be consumed in chemical reactions, but factors such as limiting reagents, excess reagents, side reactions, and equilibrium can lead to variations. Catalysts participate in reactions, but are not consumed and can work in multiple reaction cycles.

Re: The concept of reagents
I believe when we are doing calculations, we assume, unless told otherwise, that the reagents are used up in the way intended for that particular equation, however, you have to keep in mind that the calculations we do are likely theoretical for the best case scenario in which the reagents react the way we expect. In the actual observed equation, there is always the possibility that errors occur, such as the reagant being used for a separate, unwanted reaction. But, I believe that for calculations, we deal with the theoretical unless told otherwise.
