Homework Problem M11c

For question M11c in the Chemistry Review section, the problem asks to find the mass of the excess reactant. I assumed that it would need to find the excess amount of phosphorous. However, when I looked at the solutions manual, it solves for the excess reagent of phosphorous(III) oxide. Why do I solve for phosphorous(III) oxide instead of phosphorous?

Hey,

If you read further it says, '...the oxygen can react further with phosphorus (III) oxide to produce phosphorus (V) oxide...' - so this is now another reaction, where oxygen reacts with an oxide (phosphorus (III) oxide) from the previous reaction, and not just phosphorus.
So in (c) it's asking you to calculate the excess reactant of the second reaction, rather than first.
