Combustion Analysis?
Will combustion analysis be on the test? We haven't talked about it but it was in the limiting reactant section in the textbook (Fundamentals Section M3).

Re: Combustion Analysis? [ENDORSED]
I think it will be because we discussed it in lecture. The main concept is that you create water and carbon dioxide from the reactant and oxygen, and you balance the equation from there.

Re: Combustion Analysis?
Dr. Lavelle gave an interesting method of how to think about combustion: eating food + breathing in oxygen --> breathe out CO2 + H20. Hope this analogy helps!

Re: Combustion Analysis?
It might appear on the test just as an equation to be used for another topic like limiting reagents.

Re: Combustion Analysis?
It will likely come up in the future. Dr. Lavelle mentioned that combustion, burning, or oxidation of organic molecules is the same as oxidative metabolism. They all release energy. This may be a key concept.

Re: Combustion Analysis?
Will we only need to know the concept of it for this test? Or should we do practice problems to understand how to do it?

Re: Combustion Analysis?
The combustion reaction has come up several times in lecture and many of the problems on the homework use the general form, so you should know how to approach combustion problems.

Re: Combustion Analysis?
If I'm not mistake, oxidation reactions don't necessarily always release energy. I think Dr. Lavelle mentioned some oxidation reactions that are endothermic.
