You are calculating the reactant moles in order to compare the amount of reactants available to the ratios in the balanced equation to determine which reactant is limiting. You cannot compare the quantities in grams since your balanced equation gives you molar ratios.
Let's say you have 2kg of hamburger patties and 1kg of hamburger buns. How many hamburgers can you make? As you can see, we would need to know the amount of hamburger patties and buns you have in order to make this calculation. This is why we convert from grams into moles, so that we know the amount of reactants in a reaction.
