On M.5, the question asks to determine how many moles of each product will be produced. What I did is perform a mole to mole ratio by multiplying 5mol of BrF3 by the 6 moles of ClO2F and dividing that by 2 mol BrF3 to obtain the moles of ClO2F left. I got 15 moles for ClO2F but the solutions manual said it's 12. I'm assuming they simply multiplied the 6 and 2, but I don't understand why?
I think you mistakenly used BrF3 as the limiting reactant, when ClO2 should have been used to determine how much product is produced. In other words, 5 mols of BrF3 will result in 2.5 reactions when 12 mols of ClO2 will result in 2 reactions. Therefore, we use the mols of ClO2 as our limiting reactant and divide 12 by the 6 mols required to begin the reaction, and multiply by the 6 mols of product formed. We end up with 12 mols of ClO2F formed.
