Could someone explain how to find the excess reactant in M5? I'm slightly confused.

According to the balanced equation you need triple the moles of ClO2 than BrF3, which means if you have 5 moles of BrF3 you will need 15 moles of ClO2 for the reaction to b maximized. Since the problem states that there are only 12 moles of ClO2 present, that means ClO2 is the limiting reactant, which means BrF3 is in excess. Hope this helps.

We must look at the ratios for this problem. For every 2 BrF3 we use we need 6 ClO2, and vice versa. Since we have 12 ClO2, we need 4 BrF3. Since we have 5 moles, it is our excess reactant.
