### Theoretical yield

Based on the molar ratios in a balanced chemical equation a student expects 0.20 moles of product. If the molar mass of the product is 81 g.mol-1 what is the theoretical yield?

Can someone please show the steps for this problem.

You multiply the amount of moles produced by the molar mass.
Hence, 0.20 mol x 81 g/mol = 16.2 g of product.

Theoretical yield is just the expected mass of product. The question already presents the expected number of moles of product, so the only thing you have to do is convert the expected number of moles to product to the mass of product expected. This can be accomplished by using the molar mass of the product they provided as a conversion factor in dimensional analysis.

The theoretical yield is the expected mass of the products that you would find through your calculations. It is the ideal amount of product that is produced from a reaction and not the actual yield since it does not take into account impurities and other factors that may alter the products. You calculate it by multiplying the moles of the product by the molar mass using dimensional analysis.

So in the problem, they already gave you the theoretical yield, which is the amount expected should the entire experiment should go according to plan. Since they already gave you the theoretical yield in moles, you just need to convert it to grams by multiplying by the molar mass of the compound.

Dimensional analysis will reveal that the units cancel out, and you end up with an answer in grams when you multiply the 2 quantities.
