Theoretical Yield

Postby Lily Mohtashami » Tue Oct 20, 2020 4:30 pm

Should your theoretical yield be in moles of product or grams of product or will the question specify which it should be in?

I believe theoretical yield is typically in grams. Hope this helps!

The question will also most likely have the experimental yield shown somewhere, so if that is in kilograms or milligrams or something to that effect it would be best to put the theoretical yield into that unit as well, this will make it simpler if you have to do a percent yield equation.

I think it'll usually be in grams, but the question will probably clearly state how the answer should be formatted.

The theoretical yield is the maximum amount of product that can be formed and is typically in grams since the experimental yield is typically given as a mass.

It is in grams because we then use that theoretical yield and the actual yield, which is measured in grams, to get the percent yield.

The question will usually give the actual yield in grams, which means that the theoretical yield should also be in grams of product. If they give another unit then you should convert it to that in order to be able to calculate the percent yield.

Theoretical yield should usually be given in terms of grams.

I think it would want a mass, so in grams for the final answer.

the definition for theoretical yield says "amount", so I think we should automatically assume the answer should be in grams if the question didn't say otherwise. Prof.Lavelle also said in class that the unit should be grams I remember.

Since yield refers to the ultimate amount of product, it always refers to grams.

It is usually in grams because it's concerned with mass, but you should put it in whatever units the actual yield is in.
