Can someone explain how to write the net ionic equation? And what is the original equation?

Copper(II) nitrate reacts with sodium hydroxide to produce a precipitate of light blue copper(II) hydroxide. (a) Write the net ionic equation for the reaction.

Hi! In a net ionic equation, you don't include the ions that are not contributing to the specified product, which in this case is the precipitate copper(II) hydroxide. That means that we can exclude NO3- and Na2+. So now, you just write out the equation but with only the pertinent ions. Cu2+ + 2(OH)- --> Cu(OH)2.

For the midterm 1, are we supposed to know how to construct the net ion equation?

There was one question about constructing a net ionic equation in the assigned textbook problems, so I guess it might also come up in the midterm.
