Intensive vs Extensive

Postby Rosselyn_Machado_2B » Sat Mar 16, 2024 11:40 pm

Hi, can someone explain the concepts of intensive and extensive properties and what they pertain to in terms of equations? Thank you!

Extensive properties depend on the system's size. Things like mass and volume are extensive. Intensive properties are independent of size like color. Intensive properties are usually ratios or per unit in equations.

Extensive properties change in proportion to the amount of something(matter) you have. The volume, pressure, internal energy, and moles will change under equal conditions if you add more. Intensive properties don't change based on the amount. So temperature, mass, boiling point, specific heat capacity, density, and conductivity won't change just because there is more of something.

Extensive properties depend on the amount of matter (ex. volume), while intensive properties are dependent on the type of matter (ex. temperature or solubility).
