Volume and Pressure

Can you infer volume and pressure from each other? That is to say, does knowing whether or not volume is constant or not tell us anything about pressure?

A change in volume usually corresponds to a change in pressure, and they are related by the ideal gas law. If volume is constant, I think we can infer that pressure does not change.

Knowing whether volume or pressure is constant can provide insight into how a gas behaves under different conditions, as volume and pressure are inversely related according to Boyle's Law.

Volume and pressure are related in the sense that one often needs to be constant in order to solve for the other. For example, in the equation w=-PV, V is the change in volume and the P refers to the external pressure on the system which is constant in this equation in order to discern the change in volume. In this way, they are somewhat inversely proportional to one another in relation with work.

Pressure is equal to mass over area (aka distance ^2). Volume is distance^3, so the two are closely related. Thinking of a chamber inside a piston, the primary way to increase the pressure would be to depress the piston, decreasing the volume. So volume and pressure generally have an inverse relationship. The only other way to increase pressure inside this piston would be to add mass inside, but we normally don’t work with those types of problems. Hope this helps.
