Mathematical Derivations of Formulas We Use

Postby RyanTran2F » Fri Jan 19, 2018 4:18 pm

Hi. On Tests/Midterms/Final, will we need to know how to derive the formulas we learned (like how he showed us the derivations in class and in the textbook) or will we only need to know how to use them? Thanks :)

I think we will only need to know how to use the formulas but knowing how to derive them would definitely help in understanding them better.

I'm pretty sure that we don't need to know how to derive the formulas we learned. I believe that Professor Lavelle just shows us the derivations so that we have a better understanding of where the formulas we use come from and how the formulas we use are related to one another, which is helpful when solving multi-step problems. Last quarter he did the same thing and deriving the formulas never showed up on any exam, so I think it's safe to assume that he won't make us derive formulas this quarter.
