### Delta S vs Delta U

Can someone explain the difference between delta S and delta U, and when and how to use each one?

Hi,

Delta S is the change in entropy and delta U is the change in internal energy.

### Re: Delta S vs Delta U

Delta U represents the internal energy of a system, whether that is in the form of heat or work while Delta S represent the variability of different states that a molecule can be in (relating to degeneracy). Furthermore, Delta U uses strictly Jules as units while Delta S uses J/degree K.

### Re: Delta S vs Delta U

For entropy, delta S is basically a measure of the change in order/disorder of the reaction. Increasing order gives us a negative delta S value, and decreasing order gives a positive delta S value. ΔU is the change in internal energy U of the system.

Delta S is the entropy of the system, and can be positive or negative to describe that change. Delta U is the change in the internal energy of the system.
