For this problem the solutions manual assumes room temperature even though no temperature is given. Is a general rule we should follow when given a problem where temperature is not mentioned?

yes if temperature is necessary to solve the problem. Typically it is stated though (like in all Lavelle's practice problems and old midterms)

Yes, usually for these problemes, if it isn't stated, we should probably assume standard conditions.

in the book, there are a couple of problems where they assume one mole of a substance. How do we know when to do that versus when we have to calculate the amount of moles (like the one problem on the midterm)?
