### constant volume

Is there always no work done when volume is constant?

### Re: constant volume

An isochoric process is one in which the volume is held constant, meaning that the work done by the system will be zero. The only change will be that a gas gains internal energy.

Sometimes reactions happen in a rigid, sealed container such as a bomb calorimeter. When no change in volume is possible, it is also not possible for gases to do work because Delta V= 0. In this situation, work = 0 and change in energy for the system must occur in other ways such as heat.

Hope this helps.

Think of the graph we examined in lecture... Lack of volume change would contribute to no area under the curve, making the word done equal to zero.
