What exactly is delta U ? I know that it is solved for with q and w but what exactly are we solving when we solve for delta u?

Delta U is the change in internal energy. Delta U is used to see the change of internal energy due to the transfer of energy through heat or work.

Delta U stands for the change in internal energy of a system that is solved by adding work and heat.

Delta U is the change in internal energy and its a state function so its only dependent on the end state, its just the difference between where you start and end up in terms of energy
