### First law of thermodynamics

How does the equation U = qp + w directly relate to the First law of Thermodynamics?

Since q is net heat gain/lost and w is net work done (either on or by the system) we can see that energy will be conserved through a totality of calculations done as either heat or work.

### Re: First law of thermodynamics

The First Law of Thermodynamics says that for a closed system, internal energy (delta U) changes as a function of heat (q) and work (w). This is laid out in the equation delta U = q + w. Note however that this does not fully describe a system, since we also need entropy to know the probability of being in a particular state

Q is heat gained or lost and W is work done so combined they create the energy of the system
