Why does NO2 having more atoms give it a higher molar heat capacity compared to NO? The solutions manual says that it is because NO2 has more bonds to absorb added energy, but I am not really sure of what this means.

Molar heat capacity is affected by molar mass. NO2 has a higher molar heat capacity because it is a larger molecule due to being bonded with 2 oxygen molecules instead of 1 like NO. Along with that, NO2 has a higher molar mass than NO.

Molar heat capacity increases as the complexity of a molecule increases because complex molecules have more ways to rotate and vibrate, and these motions store heat.
