internal energy of a system refers to the sum of potential energy of the system along with kinetic energy.

In an isolated system, there is no transfer of heat or matter. In terms of internal energy (U=q+w), there is no heat exchange so q=0 and no change in matter so w=0. This means that the change in internal energy is equal to zero and that it remains constant throughout an experiment on an isolated system.
