Using internal or external conditions

Postby MHarrold_1E » Mon Feb 08, 2021 11:55 am

I sometimes get confused if I should use the pressure/volume/temperature of the system or the surroundings. Is there a rule of thumb that I should know or could help? Thank you!

I believe that most of the time, we will use the pressure/volume/temp of the system. For irreversible pathways, external pressure is often used (the pressure of the surroundings). For reversible pathways, we usually use the system's values.

You want to use the system's conditions!

You always want to use the system's conditions for reversible pathways.
