Because open systems involve inflow and outflow of mass as well as energy the equations become much more complicated and are usually differential in nature, so I don't believe that for this class we will have to calculate q for any open systems, but from doing a little research apparently these calculations are very important in real world engineering scenarios such as in calculating how much engines will heat up in a jet. Exactly^ There are too many moving parts for us to easily calculate q for open systems, which is why we never touched on it in 14B.
