Hi! The value qv is the heat when at constant volume. Usually, you will be given in the problem the fact that the volume is constant and that's how you know to use qv relative to qp (heat when at constant pressure). This information usually helps when solving for PV=nRT to find work and solve for internal energy, or delta U, since you know that the V remains constant thus you can solve for other variables given that information. A common example of the use of qv would be when you're solving for the heat or internal energy using a bomb calorimeter, since bomb calorimeters stay at constant volume. Hope this helps!
