wk 5 hw 1

On the basis of the structures of each of the molecules, predict which compounds would be most likely to have a residual entropy in their crystalline forms at T=0K.
How can one tell if a structure is going to have residual entropy? what is residual entropy?

residual entropy is the remaining entropy left in a substance at absolute zero. one way to tell if a compound has residual entropy by structure is mainly the symmetry of that structure, compounds with high symmetry are more likely to have residual entropy

Is there a formular for finding the residual entropy?
Residual entropy can be calculated by using the Boltzmann-Planck equation: S (E)= k ln W (E) (1) where W is the number of molecular arrangements [ 1, 2, 3, 4 ].
