Standard molar entropy

Postby Maria George 3K » Sat Mar 16, 2024 9:59 pm

In Lecture 15, Professor Lavelle mentions that all standard molar entropies are positive values.
However, in Appendix 2A, we can see in the chart that some aqueous ions that are listed have negative Som values. What is the reason for this? Should we disregard these ions if there is a question about all molar entropies being positive in the exam?

Yes, you should always ignore ions because molar entropy is always positive since it is a measure of gaining something.
