Entropy and Phase Changes

Postby 205873468 » Sun Mar 17, 2024 8:43 pm

How does entropy affect different phase change equilibriums and conditions that they undergo?

If the phase change makes the molecules more disordered (e.g. H2O(l) to H2O (g)), then there is an increase in entropy. If its the opposute, there would be a decrease in entropy.

Entropy, a measure of disorder or randomness in a system, significantly affects the conditions and equilibrium of phase changes. During a phase change, the system undergoes a transformation from one phase to another, such as solid to liquid (melting), liquid to gas (vaporization), or solid to gas (sublimation).
1. Melting: increase in entropy favors the melting process: its structure becomes less ordered as it transitions to a liquid state
2. vaporization: causes a significant increase in entropy because the gas phase is much more disordered than the liquid phase
3. freezing: a decrease in entropy since the system becomes more ordered.
4: sublimation: a substantial increase in entropy due to the drastic change in orderliness between the solid and gas phases
