9.27 Entropy

Postby Vanessa Romero-Campos 2B » Sun Feb 04, 2018 10:38 pm

How would I explain which molecule HBr or HF has a higher molar entropy? I know Br is heavier (higher atomic weight) than Fluorine but how do I connect that idea to this question? Is there any actual calculations that I can do to figure this out?

You don't need to do any calculations. You just explain that since Br has a higher atomic mass, it has higher molecular complexity (a fancy way of saying that its electrons have more energy levels that they can jump between), and that gives HBr more entropy.

Does that mean that every element has a higher entropy than the proceeding element on the periodic table? Or does there need to be a large difference in size for the entropy to differ?

I think the difference in entropy is because of the energy levels. So the element with more entropy has more energy levels.
