### conceptual entropy questions

The solutions manual for problem 9.27 says that HBr has a higher molar entropy than HF. Can someone please explain why this is true?

Also, it states for problem 9.31 that Iodine gas has a higher molar entropy than Bromine gas, because it has a larger mass. Wouldn't smaller atoms have a higher entropy, because they can be in more possible positions? Thank you

Bromine has more electrons than Fluorine, so HBr has more possible states and disorder than HF. Also, Iodine is bigger than Bromine and has more electrons, so for the same reason it has more possible states and entropy.

Smaller atoms have fewer particles like electrons, whereas larger atoms are composed of more particles. The more components there are, the higher the number of possible states and higher entropy.

The possible states, known as microstates, all have the same energy as well.

Since there are more electrons in bromine, there are more possible microstates, contributing to the higher entropy

Bromine is a larger molecule, so it will have more electrons, meaning there are more orientations for the micro states. This means there's higher entropy.
