### Degeneracy

Can some explain how the number of energy states/arrangements relates to the calculation for degeneracy?

In a given system, degeneracy W would equal the number of possible microstates to the power of the number of particles in the system. For example, if you look at the example given in class, there were 4 CO molecules at T = 0K; each CO can have atoms in two possible positions. In this problem, the 0K is to tell you that there is no degeneracy caused by heat and there is only positional degeneracy. To solve this, we see that there are 2 possible states and 4 molecules, so W = 2^4 = 16.
