Value of Variable Kb

In class when we were discussing molecules, possible positions, and residual entropy, we did a calculation with the equation: S = KblnW.
In the equation, Kb was equal to 1.381 x 10^-23 J/K.

Where did we get the value for Kb and what exactly IS Kb?

Kb is Boltzmann's constant. It is provided on the formula sheet.

From my understanding, Kb is the Boltzmann constant, and is derived from the gas constant R divided by Avogadro's number. I don't think you need to know this though, as it is on the formula sheet!

KB is the Boltzmann constant and it provides a measure of the amount of energy (i.e., heat) corresponding to the random thermal motions of the particles making up a substance. The link below sends you to a video if you want to learn more about it.

Kb is a constant value, the boltzmann Constant. The value will always be given, we dont need to memorize it. but it helps determine the entropy of a system
