Spontaneity - Enthalpy

Postby gabbymaraziti » Tue Feb 11, 2020 12:45 pm

Is a spontaneous process accompanied by an increase in entropy of the surroundings, or of the system?

Not necessarily; if the absolute value of the change in enthalpy is less than the absolute value of the change in entropy then delta G will be negative and the reaction will be spontaneous. Theoretically you could actually be decreasing entropy and still getting a spontaneous reaction as long as deltaH-TdeltaS is negative
