Types of Delta S

Postby Daniel Yu 1E » Sun Feb 16, 2020 9:53 pm

What are the different types of Delta S?
You have change in entropy resulting from work being done on the system, change in entropy due to temperature change. What else?
What is the difference between Delta S_total, Delta S, and Delta S_system and how do you calculate them based on the formulas we've learned?

Delta S total = Delta S system + Delta S surroundings.

Change in entropy can also arise from change of volume in a system.

I think the key concept to understand is that theres delta S done by temp and volume change. So detaS(t) + deltaS(v) = DeltaS(sys). Delta S total, universe, and surroundings all depend on how you calculate deltaS(sys). Just make sure you use the 2 formulas we learned in class to calculate deltaS of the system and the rest should be given by context. For example, deltaS of universe is 0 if its a reversible process. I believe for an irreversible process, deltaS surr is 0.

The different delta S are determined by the circumstance you are in. If you are addressing the system then that is DeltaS of the system. If you want to know the change in entropy of what is surrounding the system, that is DeltaS of the surroundings, and the DeltaS total is adding the DeltaS of the system with the DeltaS of the surroundings.
