### 6th edition 9.75

For this question, I was confused on how to find the possible states of the cis and trans molecules? Why are there three orientations of the trans and not two?

You will have to draw an octahedral shape with two particles of X and 4 particles of Y. For cis, you have to look at the arrangements were the X particles can be close to each other. This would result in 12 different orientations while for tran you have to make sure the X particles are opposite to each other and will only have 3 orientations that satisfy this in an octahedral.
