Residual Entropy

Postby Ashley Wang 4G » Sun Feb 02, 2020 7:23 pm

Hi,

Could someone clarify what Dr. Lavelle was explaining about residual entropy towards the end of the lecture on Friday (Lecture 4)? Including its definition and relation to the orientation of atoms in a molecule, etc; I couldn't really follow in class.

Thank you!

Residual entropy is the difference between the entropy in a state that is NOT at equilibrium and the entropy of the most stable state of a substance close to absolute zero. I was a bit confused as well.

When would you use residual entropy? Why is this value useful?

^^^ Does anyone have an example that they could walk through?
