Calculating Entropy

Postby Avantika MOhan_2B » Thu Mar 14, 2024 11:21 am

When we calculate entropy using the sum of products - reactants formula, why do we calculate it using the lowest possible fractions as coefficients instead of whole numbers? For example, when calculating entropy for H2 + O2 -> H2O we balance with H2 + 1/2O2 -> H2O instead of 2H2 + O2 -> 4H2O and use the first equation to calculate entropy. Why is this necessary?

I could be wrong, but i think it is because entropy is an extensive property, so it depends on the amount of substance present. The coefficients in the balanced equation also correspond to the number of moles of each substance present, thus using the lowest possible coefficients makes sure that we're accounting for the correct molar quantities of reactants and products when calculating entropy changes.
