What are some examples of exergonic reactions?

An example of an exergonic reaction in our body is cellular respiration. In breathing, we are releasing energy into our surroundings. Another example of an exergonic reaction is combustion.

Other examples of exergonic reactions are most, if not all, catabolic reactions, which are reactions where larger molecules are broken down into smaller molecules. These processes give off heat, meaning they are exergonic.

All exergonic reactions occur spontaneously, meaning that no outside energy is required for them to start. Another common example of an exergonic reaction is mixing sodium and chlorine to make table salt.

Oddly enough, water going from liquid to solid can also be exergonic given that the delta H being negative outweighs the fact that the entropy is decreasing.

Cellular respiration is an exergonic process. ATP is broken down to ADP and Pi during hydrolysis and energy is released.
