Can someone explain when we would need to calculate both isothermal and isovolumetric calculations and add the two? like what should the question be stating in order for us to know that we would need to combine these two processes.

Entropy is a state function and therefore changes in entropy can be calculated separately and then added together. For your question, a question would state that there was a change in temperature as well as a change in volume and ask for the final entropy of the system. To calculate this, you can use the concept that entropy is a state function and calculate the entropy change for the change in temperature and change in volume in two separate equations then add their answers to determine the total entropy change.
