Boltzmann equation

Postby AlyssaYeh_1B » Sun Feb 09, 2020 11:35 pm

When would we use the Boltzmann equation? How does it relate to entropy?

The Boltzmann equation is giving the residual entropy of the system. Entropy is the amount of "disorder" and the Boltzmann equation is sort of giving a statistical answer of all the possible orientations and positions of all the molecules in the system.

You would only use the Boltzmann equation if the reaction is at 0K and no other forms of entropy are occurring. This equation measures the residual/positional entropy of molecules.

The Boltzmann equation gives the relationship between the entropy of a system and the number of different ways or microstates that the system can be arranged on energy levels which is w.

The Boltzmann Equation gives a relationship between entropy S and degeneracy W. Degeneracy describes all the possible microstates (i.e. positions) that might be occupied by the molecules of a system. They're related because entropy is the tendency towards disorder, and degeneracy describes all the ways in which the elements of a system might be distributed. You'll be given the Boltzmann constant k(B) and probably the number of states. You'll then calculate entropy using S = k(B).ln W

The Boltzmann equation strictly talks about the residual entropy that is relating to degeneracy in disorder. The W represents the amount of micro states raise to the power of the number of particles. The Kb is the Boltzmann constant
