Delta S

Volume: $\Delta S = nR\ln \frac{V_{2}}{V_{1}}$
Temperature: $\Delta S = nC\ln \frac{T_{2}}{T_{1}}$

Delta S

I'm a little confused about the meaning of delta s total versus delta s of the system/surroundings.

Re: Delta S

The delta S total is the delta S of the system plus surroundings.

Re: Delta S

Delta S total is always 0 or greater, as it accounts for the entropy of everything and entropy always increases. It is made up of Ssys and Ssur, depending on what you define as your system. The 2 added together equal S total.

Re: Delta S

Delta s total is the sum of delta s of surroundings and system.

Re: Delta S

Ssys + Ssurr = Stot
same thing applies when you make them all delta

Re: Delta S

Delta S total is the entropy of both the system and its surroundings, while delta S surroundings is just the entropy of the surroundings and not the system.

Re: Delta S

delta S(univ)= delta S(sys) + delta S(surr)

Re: Delta S

Delta S total is equal to delta s or the surroundings plus delta s of the system. When the reaction is reversible then delta s total is equal to zero because the work done on the surroundings and on the system is equal
