Using Pressure in a deltaS equation

Postby Anna Lockhart 2B » Sun Feb 21, 2021 10:03 pm

In practice problem 4F.9 we are given the pressure changes to find the change in Entropy. How do we apply that to the equation: deltaS=nRln(V2/V1)?

Since pressure is the inverse of volume, you can replace V2 and V1 with P2 and P1

Since pressure is the inverse of volume for an ideal gas you're able to write the equation deltaS= nRlnP1/P2 in order to solve this problem. Now all you have to do is plug in the values :)

Hi!

For 4F.9, instead of using volumes, just replace them with the given pressures! It would be deltaS=n*R*ln(P2/P1). The P is in atm, so also remember to use the correct R value of 0.08206 (L*atm)/(K*mol). Hope that helps!

Since in PV=nRT, pressure and volume have an inverse relationship, so you can replace V2 and V1 with P2 and P1.
