Work is done during spontaneous processes in which the free energy decreases. Free energy determines the direction in which the reaction leans.

To further elaborate on spontaneous reactions, they are systems in which products' total free energy is lower than that of the reactants. Because the natural world prefers low-energy states, the reaction occurs without the input of heat and instead gives off energy! However, systems in which the products have more total free energy require the input of heat and therefore do not occur spontaneously!

Work is done during spontaneous processes and so the energy always decreases when seeing spontaneous processes.
