Resonance with degeneracy

Postby Deep Mehta » Sun Mar 17, 2024 7:06 pm

I was wondering whether resonance affects the Boltzmann's equation (S = kBln(W)). If it does, how do you account for it?

While resonance affects the electronic structure and distribution within a molecule, the Boltzmann equation deals with the overall distribution of energy among all possible microstates of a system. Therefore, while resonance is crucial for understanding molecular structure and stability, its effect is not directly described by the Boltzmann equation, which operates at the level of statistical ensembles and thermodynamic quantities

Resonance does not effect the Boltzmann equation directly; however, an increase in resonance is correlated with an increase in entropy.
