Re: degeneracy
Degeneracy is used to help calculate the entropy of a system, which can be used to calculate the Gibbs free energy of a reaction or system.
Re: degeneracy
Degeneracy is defined as having two or more quantum states in a quantized energy level. For example, 2p would have three degenerate orbitals, 2px 2py 2pz, because they are in the same n=2 energy level.

Re: degeneracy
Where in the textbook do they talk about degeneracy and which homework problems are related to it?

Re: degeneracy
Degeneracy was talked about in the lecture. I think it was the lecture about the number of possible positions for a molecule or something like that.

Re: degeneracy
Degeneracy relates to thermodynamics in that it is used to calculate the change in entropy. The way I remember it is that Lavelle mentioned that he was purposefully avoiding the word disorder in regards to the topic of entropy because degeneracy is a better way to describe what entropy is and what it does to a system.

Re: degeneracy
degeneracy can be thought of as having more than one state for a molecule or system. it has to do with entropy and disorder.

Re: degeneracy
Do we have to use degeneracy to calculate the entropy of a system? Is there ever any occasion in which we can use another method to calculate entropy?

Re: degeneracy
This is useful in entropy which measures the disorder of a system. This means having more than one state (either in a system or within a molecule).

Re: degeneracy
Degeneracy is the number of different ways that energy can exist. With degeneracy, we can calculate the entropy of a system.

Re: degeneracy
Degeneracy is useful when calculating the entropy of a system. In the equation S=kBlnW, W is the degeneracy and therefore we can plug in the value to find to entropy (S).

Re: degeneracy
Degeneracy can be used to help calculate the entropy of the system, especially when not given q or T.

Re: degeneracy
Degeneracy is the number of different ways that energy can exist, and degeneracy and entropy are directly related. This means that the higher that entropy is then there are potentially more ways for energy to be and so degeneracy is increased as well.

Re: degeneracy
Degeneracy is the possible options that will result in the same energy state. If you look at the equation S = kb*ln(W), we can observe a direct relationship between degeneracy and entropy. As we increase degeneracy, entropy increases. This is important for determining certain phenomena, such as the answer as to why gas has the largest entropy. Hope this helps a bit!
