What is the difference between isothermal and adiabatic changes?

Isothermal = no change in temperature
Adiabatic = no transfer of energy as heat

An isothermal process requires that any energy supplied as heat is expended as work in order to maintain a constant temperature. For this process, w = -q and U = 0

An adiabatic process can involve a temperature differential. However, adiabatic means that heat is not allowed to flow in or out of the system, so the value for q will be 0. The internal energy of the system can still be changed by the action of work via compression or expansion.
