Gibbs free energy vs potential energy

Postby 006248274 » Sun Mar 17, 2024 11:40 pm

Ok so I know that Gibbs free energy is the energy available to do work, but I was just wondering, in that case, what is the difference between Gibbs free energy and potential energy? is Gibbs free energy a type of potential energy? If so, what type? I was just thinking that potential energy is the energy that can be used during work/movement.

Hello! To answer your question asking about the difference between Gibbs free energy and potential energy..
Gibbs free energy is more specific to thermodynamic systems and predicting the spontaneity of reactions - while potential energy is more general and applied when representing stored energy given a certain position or state. I hope this helps!
