entropy vs enthalpy

Postby 006248274 » Sun Mar 17, 2024 11:43 pm

Is there any real life situation where delta S is positive and delta H is positive? or is it impossible

When ice melts, it undergoes a phase change from a solid to a liquid. This process is endothermic (deltaH is pos.). because energy is required to break the intermolecular forces holding the solid lattice together. Additionally, the liquid water molecules are more disordered than the solid ice lattice, leading to an increase in entropy (deltaS is pos.).

I believe if both delta H and delta S were positive, the reaction would be spontaneous only at high temperatures, and delta G as well would only be positive at higher temperature
