Limitations of STANDARD Gibbs Free Energy Values

Postby laurence14b2f » Sun Mar 17, 2024 11:51 pm

Hello! What are the limitations of using standard Gibbs free energy values in predicting the spontaneity of reactions under non-standard conditions, and how do we address them? Thanks!

Hello, one of the biggest limitations is that Gibbs Free energy does not deal with the kinetics of the problem so we do not get to know the rate of the reaction. As well as it assumes that the reaction is at constant temperature and pressure which may not always be the case. To handle this problem we would have to use separate equations to get the values desired.
